Day One Hundred Fifty-Four

A bunch of my colleagues and I are running a half marathon this weekend, which is awesome. Also awesome: one of my friends coming up to run, too. I took the day off so I could go get him from the train station.

While I was out of my classroom, my Global Studies students did some vocab practice and an annotation assignment about unresolved issues in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict following the signing of the Oslo Accords; and my APGOV students did a last bit of review before Monday's exam. I told them they could email or video chat me if necessary, but none of them did. They're ready for it.

Dear Gus & Magnus,

After we all walked Gus to school and watching him walk across the stage as Fergus for Book Character Day, Mom said she needed some time with me, so I decided to take the day off. We went in search of a new dining room table that will accommodate more than four people, and a new breakfast table that's not an outdoor table that maybe Magnus won't enjoy shaking back and forth until things fall off of it. No luck on either of those, but we got Mom's oil changed and had a nice lunch at Blackberry Market, and spent some quality time together.

Day Thirty-Nine

One of my former students subbed for me today (I took a personal day because I was traveling home from New York City). It's still wild to me when that happens, heh. I didn't hear anything from her, and no news is generally good news, but I guess I'll find out for sure how the day went when I arrive tomorrow.

In theory, my freshmen did some vocab practice and annotated an article about Christianity, and my seniors continued researching 2024 presidential candidates for their mini-projects. I graded their papers on the train, so I also got some revisions.

Will be grading those during my prep time in the morning!

Angst in my 💒

a big lesson for me was learning that most things are not as fragile as I’d believed. missing a class, or turning in a bad assignment, won’t instantly destroy your professor’s opinion of you. accidentally saying something harsh won’t make your friend want to end the friendship. it takes work to repair these things - it takes effort and research and sometimes a sincere apology - but you can do that because they’re not irreparably broken. what you’ve worked to build, in academia and in relationships and in life, is stronger and more enduring that your mind may teach you to believe. don’t let imagined fragility lead you to giving up
